ICSI in India

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, also known as ICSI, was the main breakthrough in the field of Assisted Reproductive Technology. It was introduced in 1992.

It is indicated when the male partner has very low or zero sperm count, or when he has erection or ejaculation problems. Poor morphology, poor motility, or other problems with the sperm may also call for ICSI.

About 25,000 babies are born with ICSI in the United States each year. But the cost of ICSI in the US, and other Western Countries in prohibitive and that is the prime reason many turn to India for treatments like this.

The Procedure:

As the name explains, in ICSI, a single sperm is directly injected into the egg.

For the Female

Step 1: Take drugs to stimulate ovulation

Step 2: Eggs are collected and injected with your partner’s (or donor’s) sperm

Step 3: Fertilized eggs are transferred to your womb after 2-3 days

Step 4: Pregnancy test on a set date

For the male:

Step 1: Sperm collection and their examination under microscope. If quality is determined to be fine and it can be collected on the same day as the egg from the female, proceed to step 2. Otherwise, call for donor sperms.

Step 2: Sperm collection from the epididymis or testicles

Step 3: Injection of sperms into the collected eggs, and a chance of fertilization!

If the sperm count is zero:

In cases of vasectomy, the sperm can be retrieved from the testicles (testicular sperm extraction or TESA) or epididymis (percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration or PESA).

However, if the sperm count is zero for any other reason, consider Donor Insemination or In-vitro fertilization.
